Tick and Parasite Awareness for Coastal Pets

No off-season here

Unlike colder regions, coastal Tanzania does not get a parasite “break”. Fleas and ticks can remain active all year round, and intestinal worms are common in every environment — from a walled garden to a busy street. Our warm, humid climate is, unfortunately, close to ideal for the creatures that make pets itchy and unwell.

That is why we talk about parasite prevention so often. It is one of the few areas of veterinary care where a small, regular effort prevents a great deal of suffering later. It protects your pet, your family and the animals your pet meets.

The parasites we see most

A few of the common problems we help owners prevent and treat:

  • Ticks, which can transmit serious tick-borne diseases
  • Fleas, which cause itching and can spread tapeworm
  • Intestinal worms, common in puppies and kittens in particular
  • Mange and other skin parasites that cause hair loss and irritation
  • Ear mites and other parasites that make pets scratch and shake

Why year-round protection makes sense

Many owners think of parasite treatment as something to do only when they see a problem. In practice, prevention works best when it is steady and uninterrupted. Stopping and starting leaves gaps in protection, and those gaps are exactly when parasites take hold.

It is also about the household. Some parasites can pass between pets and people, so keeping your animal protected is a kindness to the whole family, not only the pet. For puppies and kittens, whose bodies are still developing and whose immunity is still building, regular protection matters even more.

Building a simple routine

1

Ask us what suits your pet

The right product depends on your pet’s age, weight, species and lifestyle. We will recommend something effective and easy for you to keep up with.

2

Follow the schedule

Whether a treatment is monthly or at another interval, sticking to the timing is what keeps protection strong. We can help you remember.

3

Check your pet regularly

Run your hands over your pet’s coat and check the ears, skin and around the tail. Bring anything unusual to us early.

4

Treat the environment too

Bedding, kennels and favourite resting spots can harbour fleas and their eggs. Cleaning them alongside treatment makes a real difference.

Come and talk to us

We encourage every owner to keep their pet on a consistent preventive plan, and we are always happy to explain the options. There is no single product that suits every animal, so the best answer is a short conversation about your pet’s needs.

Prevention is one of the simplest gifts you can give an animal: less itching, less illness and fewer surprises. Come and speak to us about the right products and schedule for your pet — we will help you make it part of your normal routine.
