Veterinary Consultation

Every good outcome starts with listening. Our consultations give your pet proper time, attention and a thorough clinical assessment before any treatment is decided, and they put you at the centre of every choice.

What to expect

What a consultation is, and when to book one

A veterinary consultation is a scheduled appointment in which one of our veterinarians examines your pet, takes a full history and advises you on what — if anything — needs to happen next. It is the starting point for almost everything else we do, whether your pet is unwell, has been injured, is due a vaccination or simply has not been seen for a while.

Book a consultation if you notice a change in appetite, energy, drinking or urination; vomiting or diarrhoea; coughing, sneezing or difficulty breathing; limping or stiffness; itching, hair loss or a new lump; bad breath or trouble eating; or any behaviour that seems out of character. Equally, book one if nothing is obviously wrong but your pet is due an annual check-up. Many of the conditions we treat are far easier to manage when they are found early.

If you are unsure whether your pet needs to be seen, call us and describe what you have noticed. Our team will help you decide whether to come in, to monitor at home for a day, or to come in straight away as an emergency.

What happens, step by step

1

Welcome and history

We settle your pet into the consultation room and ask detailed questions: what you have noticed, when it began, how it has changed, what your pet eats, their daily routine, past illnesses and any treatment already tried. Your observations are the most valuable diagnostic tool we have.

2

Full clinical examination

The veterinarian examines your pet from nose to tail — temperature, heart and pulse, breathing, hydration, mucous membranes, lymph nodes, abdomen, ears, eyes, mouth, skin, coat, joints and body condition. We work at your pet’s pace, using treats, towels and gentle handling to keep them as relaxed as possible.

3

Findings and diagnosis

We explain what we have found in plain language and what it may mean. Where the picture is unclear, we recommend targeted diagnostics so that decisions rest on evidence rather than guesswork.

4

Plan and costs

You receive a clear written or verbal plan: what we propose, why we propose it, how long it should take and what it will cost. Nothing proceeds without your agreement, and we are happy to answer questions first.

5

Treatment or referral

We begin treatment in the clinic wherever possible. If your pet needs something we do not offer in-house — advanced imaging or specialist surgery, for example — we say so honestly and help arrange a referral.

What a consultation includes

Every consultation at Mecco includes the following, as standard:

  • A full history taken with you, the owner
  • A complete physical and clinical examination
  • A clear explanation of what we find and what it may mean
  • A written or verbal treatment plan, with expected costs before we begin
  • Preventive advice tailored to your pet’s age, lifestyle and risk
  • Follow-up guidance, and a review appointment where one is needed
  • A record of the visit kept in your pet’s file for continuity of care

Decisions we make together

Once we understand the problem, we discuss the options with you — from the most conservative approach to the most advanced. You will always know what each choice involves, how long it may take and what it is likely to cost before we proceed. There is no pressure and no hidden step.

We are equally comfortable telling you when the kindest option is to wait and watch, and when it is not. Sometimes the best medicine is a simple change at home; sometimes it is a course of treatment; and sometimes a referral genuinely offers your pet a better chance. We will tell you which we believe applies.

Aftercare, follow-up and honest limits

Visit summaries and medication instructions are written down so you are not relying on memory when you get home. For ongoing conditions we keep notes of your pet’s progress, so every visit builds on the last rather than starting from scratch.

A single consultation cannot answer every question, and we will never pretend otherwise. Some conditions need repeat visits, tests over time or the opinion of a specialist. What we can promise is that we will be straight with you about what we know, what we do not yet know, and what the next sensible step is.
